GENERATORS

It really depends. Every house is different. We always recommend a professional properly enter the electrical loads into a generator calculator to ensure the right size.
These are maintenance/inspection lights. Think of them like the oil change light in your car. They're timing based recommendations for optimal lifespan and performance.
Test time changes across many different models. Older units often test for 12 minutes while newer units test for about 5. Commercial sized liquid cooled units will run for 10 or more minutes per test.
Short answer is maybe. A red light is very broad, indicating anything from low oil to major component failure. If anything, just let us know what the light indicates, and we can let you know if a technician needs to access it.
Of course! We service all Generac portables, Generac air cooled standbys, and Generac commercial standbys up to 150kW that are not industrial. Call us and we can assist further.
We recommend replacing the battery every 3 years for the Generac Evolution/Nexus models produced in 2025 and earlier. Current Next Gen units should be replaced every 4 years.
Yes you can. Generators built after 2012 can use cellular Mobile Link. It uses cell towers just like your phone to provide real time updates to the Mobile Link app. The biggest benefit is that our office can also see the generator status, providing another level of comfort if anything happens.
At least once a year based on Generac's minimum recommendation. Due to our storm seasons, Deak Electric suggests servicing the generator twice a year for optimal lifespan. Although the service schedule specifies maintenance every two years or 200 hours, a small note at the bottom specifies that the generator requires annual maintenance due to the Northeast's weather and temperature conditions.
Yes. Generators are considered permanent structures which often bunches them into a category like sheds or decks. Home improvement jobs such as generator installations often trouble homeowners during a house sale if permits aren't pulled.
Every installation is different. A generator project is tailored to your electrical system and usage during a power outage. Our generator specialists can provide everything you need for a price after assessing the property.
For a short outage lasting less than 3 days, just sit back and relax. At days 3-4, check the motor oil by shutting down the unit and using the built in generator dip stick. Have a quart of Full Synthetic 5W-30 on hand, as oil will most likely need to be added. Add 100 mL at a time and check the dipstick frequently. Put the generator back in auto and relax for a few more days. Check your propane levels if needed.
Generac models consume varying amounts of fuel depending on engine size and electrical load. On average, partial home generators consume approximately 2 gallons an hour while whole home units consume 3 gallons an hour. Be careful. High electrical loads such as air conditioners can increase fuel consumption significantly, causing fuel to deplete much quicker.

ELECTRICAL

It's best to have a professional make that assessment. Electrical panels have long life spans but some models may be considered dangerous or unsafe by today's standards.
Most likely. Modern houses often have 200 Amp services and necessary space for a car charger. 100 Amp electrical services will probably require an upgrade to 200 Amp first.
Are your lights on a dimmer and do you have LED lights installed? Older light dimmers are not compatible with new LEDs and can cause an annoying flicker. If your lights are not on a dimmer... you might want to give us a call.
If the circuit breaker trips about 3 or more times in a row, call us. There's a good likelihood the breaker is doing its job and something else is wrong.
Outlets in the kitchen, outside, and garage are often protected by a nearby GFCI outlet or a GFCI breaker at the electrical panel. If the outlets stop working in a bedroom, living room, or hallway you should call us.
